Guatavita is one of a number of places just outside of Bogotá which is worth visiting, along with La Calera, Sopó, Zipaquira and its Salt Cathedral.

You will want to leave early as getting there is about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Bogota. The whole trip is going to take the better part of a day.

Check the best times to visit and be mindful of the weather. Lake Guatavita’s climate can vary, so packing accordingly will enhance your comfort during the trip. The park’s schedule is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except the first day of each month. The lake is 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) above sea level so it may very well be cool. Dress accordingly.

During weekends, you can opt for a convenient journey to the town of Guatavita by taking a bus from Portal Norte and making a transfer in Sesquilé. Alternatively, catch a bus from Calle 72 with Carrera 9 to La Calera and then board a bus to Guatavita town. This will cost about $5 USD.
You will then have to take a local colectivo bus from the town to the actual lake.
However, for a smoother experience, consider booking a tour to Guatavita directly from Bogotá. This allows for a seamless journey with the guidance of an English-speaking tour guide. And the tour will get you back to Bogota at the end of the trip!
A Note About Food
While the park’s regulations strictly prohibit bringing food inside, in reality, I managed to discreetly carry some nuts and cheese in my pocket without encountering any checks. It seems that as long as you keep your snacks hidden, you’ll likely go unnoticed. Presumably, these rules aim to reduce litter on the trail. Just something to keep in mind and be prepared for.
Is Guatavita Lake Worth Visiting?
I believe a visit to Guatavita is worthwhile, especially if you are a resident of Bogotá or planning an extended stay. The reason being, the travel time required to reach Guatavita may compete with other nearby attractions just outside Bogotá, such as Zipaquirá and the Salt Cathedral, Chingaza National Park, and the Coffee Farm at Tibacuy.
With so many enticing options, it might be challenging to explore everything in a limited timeframe. Consequently, considering Guatavita as a secondary option could be more suitable if your stay in Bogotá is brief. It is certainly worth visiting if you have the time.
