Where Is Minca, Colombia?
What are the best things to do in Minca? Let’s discuss some other stuff first.
Nestled atop a mountain in the Colombian Sierra Nevadas, Minca stands apart from the usual Colombian backpacker route. With a population of only about 800, this quaint town(more of a village) offers a sense of isolation while providing stunning views of Santa Marta and the Caribbean Sea(when you get to a high enough elevation!).
Despite being just a 45-minute drive from the bustling coastal town of Santa Marta and a mere 5 hours from the vibrant city of Cartagena, Minca is often overlooked. However, its unique charm and proximity make it a worthwhile detour. If you’re planning a journey to the northern coast of Colombia, be sure to include Minca in your travel itinerary.
It is worth noting that Santa Marta is usually the jumping off point for those backpackers wo are doing the hike to the Lost City. So if you are doing that trek, you may want to add Minca to your travel plans.
How To Get to Minca, Colombia
Minca is a small town located in the northern part of Colombia, specifically in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is situated near the city of Santa Marta and overlooks the Caribbean Sea. The town is known for its scenic beauty, cool climate, and lush surroundings, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.
So if you are already in Cartagena you will want to consider adding Minca to your Colombia itinerary. A lot of backpackers spend a few days in the coastal city of Santa Marta. I did not go to Santa Marta at all in 2019 but I did spend 3 nights in Minca and loved it.
Minca could be included as part of a Cartagena, Barrinquilla, Santa Marta itinerary as they are all in the same region.
I took a bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta, which takes about 5 hours, and then immediately got on a shuttle with all the other backpackers and went to Minca. That leg of the trip is only about 45 minutes and cost me about 8000 pesos or $3 USD.
Please note that is you book your bus trip online(from Cartagena to Santa Marta for example) keep a copy of all receipts to prove that you have paid for your ticket. It seems to me that someone on the bus was forced to pay AGAIN as they could not prove that they have purchased a ticket. Things got a bit heated between them and the driver. Just a word to the wise.
Is Minca Worth Visiting?
This question is a bit subjective of course. Minca is a sleepy little town with mostly dirt roads and you are surrounded by nature. That being said, it is becoming a bit trendy with shops and restaurants. My assessment is that it is a bit popular with those backpackers who might be into more of an “off-grid”, bohemian type of lifestyle.
It’s certainly a picturesque area offering numerous attractions such as waterfalls, coffee plantations, and even a nearby brewery to explore.
So only you can really answer if Minca is worth visiting based on what you are into. I think you will be glad you included it as part of your Colombian adventure.

At the time that I was in Minca I was 49 years old and I really enjoyed it. There is great hiking and peacefulness in the area. I felt it was a great place to get away for at least a few days. Minca is the kind of place where you might go for 2 or 3 days and end up staying a week or longer. I am a huge fan of slow travel.
I think it is worth the journey.

Thanks to its increasing popularity with the backpacking crowd there are various options for where to stay when you land in Minca.
There are more than a few very nice hostels, some of which cater to a younger, party crowd.
You will also find quieter hostels for people like me who do enjoy being social but also enjoy a more relaxed(quieter) atmosphere.
Also note that because of Minca’s increasing popularity, hostel prices might seem a bit higher than you would expect. Especially for those who are more budget minded.
I am seeing beds in dorm rooms starting at $10 USD and going all the way up to over $30 USD.
What’s the most you would spend on a dorm bed in a hostel?
Some of the hostels in Minca may have outside restrooms so it is a good idea to have a headlamp! And you are in bug country. So mosquitoes are going to be around. You have been warned. Plan accordingly.
Casa Loma Minca
Be prepared for a challenging 10 minute walk uphill to get to Casa Loma. But the views are worth it. And a very nice hostel overall. You might extend your stay!
A dorm bed is about $10 USD so very budget friendly.

8 Of The Best Things to Do In Minca
Okay. You made it to Minca. You have a hostel to stay at. Now what? What are some of the best things to do in Minca now that you are here?
A lot of your activities may include hiking through the forest/jungle and it can be a bit buggy. You will want to make sure you have some kind of bug repellant that you are okay with using multiple times per day. I hate spritzing myself with chemicals so you might want to look at Badger products if you feel the same way.
1. CLIFF JUMPING AT POZO AZUL WATERFALL
Dive into the excitement at Pozo Azul, a trio of swimming spots along the river near Minca. This scenic locale features a magnificent waterfall and serves as an ideal setting for thrilling cliff jump jumping.
To reach Pozo Azul, you have two options. Take a moto-taxi from town for approximately 6,000 COP/$2 or embark on a picturesque hike along a road flanked by jungle, rolling hills, and farms. The hike, lasting about an hour, offers stunning views. I recommend moto-taxis for the uphill journey to the waterfall and relish the downhill hike back to town.
2. EMBARK ON A HIKING ADVENTURE!
For outdoor enthusiasts, Minca is a haven, and exploring the stunning landscapes through hiking is among the finest ways to experience this beautiful region of Colombia – with the added possibility of encountering monkeys or toucans along the way!
While many of Minca’s top hikes lead you through dense, humid jungles, the mountains offer a refreshing break from the heat, and the allure of waterfalls adds to the appeal. Here are some prime hiking destinations in Minca:
Easy: Las Piedras Just a 15-minute journey from town, Las Piedras boasts a picturesque spot along the River Minca. It’s a quick and delightful option for a relaxing morning, easily accessible from the village.
Medium: Las Cascadas de Marinka If you have a basic understanding of Spanish, you already know the treat that awaits on this hike: waterfalls! The hour-long trek rewards you with refreshing water and a fantastic photo opportunity. To reach Las Cascadas de Marinka, walk past the church on the main town road (keeping the church on your left) and ascend the hill. Continue until you spot a sign that reads “Finca la Esperanza, La Cascadas Minka.” Bring some cash, as there is a 5,000 COP/~$1.30 entrance fee to the falls.
Hard: Los Pinos For a more challenging adventure, embark on the 5-7 hour trek that takes you past Pozo Azul and Las Cascadas in a rewarding loop. The toughest part of the hike involves a two-hour uphill climb. It’s advisable to start early in the morning, especially as, on a clear day at the highest point of the trek, you might catch a glimpse of distant snowy mountains. Ensure you pack ample water and snacks for this demanding journey.
3.UNWIND IN AN OVERSIZED HAMMOCK!
Sierra Minca stands out as one of the most sought-after hostels in the charming town of Minca, and its unique feature is nothing short of iconic: each cabin at Sierra Minca is equipped with an expansive hammock nets that offer panoramic views!
While it requires a two-hour hike (or a quick 20-minute taxi or mototaxi ride) from the town, the breathtaking views make it well worth the journey. Starting from the main intersection, head towards the church but keep going, and going—it’s more akin to a trapeze net. The best part? You don’t have to be a guest to relish this experience! Opt for a day pass at 15,000 COP, or treat yourself to a pass inclusive of lunch for 40,000 COP (approximately $10).
4. Eat, Drink and be Merry
Enjoying local food and a cold cerveza is always a great thing to do. And one of the best things to do in Minca is to enjoy the bread!
Enter the world of Duni, an artisanal bread shop in Minca that tantalizes taste buds with delectable, freshly baked treats. Utilizing locally sourced wheat and chocolate, much of which is cultivated by the Tayrona Indians, Duni’s offerings showcase a delightful fusion of flavors.
As you savor the mouthwatering creations, you might even encounter a traditionally dressed Tayrona Indian delivering some of the supplies. Interestingly, glimpses of traditionally dressed Indians are a common occurrence in Minca.
5. GO ON AN OUTDOOR EXPEDITION
Meet Jungle Joe, the local bird collector and tour guide, serving as a comprehensive hub for guided adventures in Minca.
Bird watching is such a great activity, and this is one of the best things to do in Minca for sure.
Jungle Joe’s offerings span a variety of thrilling activities, including tubing, canyoning, bird watching (with the Sierra Nevadas boasting 162 out of the 300 bird species in Colombia), coffee tours, and much more. Whether you prefer to select individual tours à la carte or immerse yourself in a full day of diverse activities, Jungle Joe has your adventure needs covered.
6. EXPLORE A COFFEE PLANTATION!
Despite not being situated in Colombia’s renowned Coffee Region, Minca offers an extraordinary local coffee experience. This was one of the best things to do in Minca that I took part in. I enjoy history and learning about things.
One of the favorites is the Finca La Victoria Plantation, located uphill from Pozo Azul. This coffee farm operates entirely on water power sourced from nearby mountain streams, embodying a commitment to self-sustainability.
Commencing from the main intersection in town, a breathtaking 90-minute hike through stunning landscapes leads you to this coffee haven. Tours are priced at 20,000 COP/ ~$5 USD, inclusive of a delightful cup of coffee. The last tour of the day concludes at 4:15 PM, but considering the sunset around 6 PM, ensure ample time for the return hike downhill.
7. ENJOY A TRANQUIL SUNSET EXPERIENCE
Another of the best things to do in Minca is taking in the sunset. This becomes Minca’s version of a movie night. If you manage to reach a suitable vantage point, you’ll be treated to an impeccable panorama stretching from the lush Sierra Nevada mountains to the sparkling lights of Santa Marta and the Caribbean Sea. Grab a cerveza and maybe your camera and just enjoy the moment.
8. Relax With A Local Craft Beer
A cold cerveza. So rewarding after a long day. Certainly one of the best thigs to do in Minca. You have two enticing options to savor exceptional local craft beers. The first and most convenient choice is to visit Nevada Brewery, situated next to La Victoria coffee farm. Here, you can sample the three tap beers produced by the brewery.
Alternatively, you can embark on a 20-minute hike from the coffee farm to Casas Viejas and indulge in the exact same beers while enjoying a breathtaking view at their bar. Keep in mind that the bar at Casas Viejas opens at 2 pm, so plan your arrival accordingly.
These beers are crafted by the same owners of the coffee farm, incorporating coffee and cacao into two of the brews! Both Nevada and Casas Viejas offer their beers on tap, featuring a pale ale (a personal favorite), red ale, and pilsner. All beers are priced at 10,000 COP ($2 USD) per pint. If you’re a beer enthusiast, this activity in Minca is sure to delight your taste buds!
