How Do I Get to the Cocora Valley

Located in the heart of the Andes Mountains, the Cocora Valley is a nature lover’s paradise that is worth the journey. To get there, you’ll first need to make your way to the nearby town of Salento.

How to Get to Salento

Salento is the jumping off point for hiking the Valle de Cocora and is were you will finding a hostel, The easiest way to reach Salento is by taking a bus from Bogotá or Medellín. Depending on which city you start from, the drive time will be about 4 to 8 hours and will cost anywhere from $15 to $25 USD. Buses run regularly and are a comfortable and affordable option.

Once in Salento, the most popular way to get to the Cocora Valley is by Jeep. Don’t worry, you can’t miss them. There are lots of them waiting to take backpackers to the park entrance. Jeeps depart from the town square every morning and take around 20 minutes to reach the valley.

How Long Should I Stay in Salento?

I feel you book two nights in Salento. You are going to arrive at your hostel on day one. Salento is a nice town that is good for wandering around, having some food and coffee(of course!), and just taking it easy after your journey.

After a good night’s rest you are off to hike the Valle de Cocora. It is going to tire you out and you may end up a bit muddy depending on the conditions of the trail. You will want to have another night booked to get cleaned up, enjoy a ceveza, and get another good sleep before heading out on your next adventure in Colombia.

This is how I did it in 2019 and how I would do it again.
