What are The Benefits of Solo Travel?
You have been feeling an itch for an adventure. You know that there is a big world out there and you want to see it. All of it.
And it is okay if you have to travel solo.
Desiring an adventure, you begin contemplating travelling. The plan takes shape, contemplating a journey, researching destinations. Perhaps a flight to South East Asia, South America or Europe.
The process commences: saving money to boost your travel fund, nightly research sessions, and an escalating excitement with each passing hour.
And you come to the realization that it might just be a solo travel trip. Oh sure, it would be great if you had a travel buddy but not everyone has the where-with-all to travel for a few weeks, a month, or longer.

Solo Travel: An Exploration of Yourself
Solo travel is not just a physical journey; it’s a profound exploration of self, an exhilarating adventure that opens the door to a world of possibilities. There are certain experiences that come with embracing the road alone.
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. You get a job, maybe have a mortgage, or buy a bunch of stuff you probably didn’t really need. You go to work and pay bills. Instead of living, you feel that all you are really doing is dying.
And when it comes to heading out on a solo adventure it is very easy to have some fears, nervousness and trepidation.
Age Does Not Matter
What if something bad happens?
What if I don’t meet anyone?
Am I too old for solo travel?
HOW DO I DO HIS??!!
The best age to solo travel is whatever age you are, if you like solo traveling. To hell with anyone who says any different.
It is completely normal to have these fears and questions. I get it. I do still think about my age when I book a hostel. And you know what? It all works out in the end. No one cares.
You have to be brave enough to take the first step.
How I Started With Solo Travel
It was 2008. I had a term teaching job for the year and I started thinking about what I might want to do the following summer. School was going to be out. My son was with his mom. And I had always wanted to wander the earth. This was the time to do it. I realized that I had to stop waiting for the so called best time to travel.
That was the start of my solo travels. I really had minimal (if any) idea what I was doing. But I came up with a plan to head to Europe for the summer of 2009.
And off I went. I landed in Paris on July 1st. And quickly realized that I did not have the printout for my first hostel. I was so overwhelmed I could not remember the name of the place. This was before smartphones had become the norm.
Finally the name of the hostel came to me and I somehow found it.
So I managed to find my way around various places in Italy, Spain and a bit of France.
It was an amazing adventure.
Mistakes Will Happen
So yes, mistakes will happen. There will be hiccups. So what. It’s all part of the adventure of hitting the road as a solo traveller.
Fast forward to 2011 and my son came to live with me and stayed until he graduated in 2016.
The following winter I was off to Nicaragua for January and February.
And I went for 2 months in 2019 and again in 2020 to Colombia and Guatemala respectively.
All solo. That being said I have met people while traveling and have made some amazing connections. And I’m a middle aged man who is most certainly an introvert.
If I can do solo travel and meet people trust me so can you.
Pros of Solo Travel
Freedom to Choose: One of the primary joys of solo travel is the freedom to curate your journey entirely. From destinations to daily itineraries, every choice is yours. There’s a unique sense of empowerment in making spontaneous decisions, allowing you to follow your whims and explore hidden gems that might go unnoticed in group settings.
Self-Discovery in Solitude: Solo travel provides an unparalleled opportunity for self-discovery. Removed from the familiar surroundings and routines, you have the chance to introspect, learn, and grow. Embracing solitude fosters self-reliance and resilience, as you navigate challenges, make decisions, and discover strengths you might not have known existed.
You Might Meet Like Minded People: Meeting like minded people is one of the best parts of solo travel. In Nicaragua, on a “chicken bus”, Leanne from Switzerland sat down next to me and we just started talking. And then she invited me to join her as she went to El Salvador! WHAT?! So off I went for the next 2 weeks. She spoke much more Spanish than I did and it was amazing.
She and I met up again in Colombia in 2019 and again in Mexico(part of my 2020 trip).
On my second night at the hostel in Antigua, Guatemala in 2020, I met a chap from England. We clicked and traveled together for almost the entire 2 months. We have stayed in touch for the past few years and are meeting up in Bogota in January of 2024.
Your tribe is out there.
Cultural Immersion: Without the comfort of a familiar companion, solo travelers are often more open to interacting with locals and fellow travelers. This opens the door to authentic cultural experiences, meaningful conversations, and a deeper understanding of the places visited. The joy lies in the genuine connections forged along the way.
Flexibility and Spontaneity: Solo travel liberates you from the constraints of group dynamics and rigid schedules. Revel in the joy of spontaneity—changing plans on a whim, extending stays in captivating locations, and immersing yourself in the present moment without compromise. I have become a huge fan of the concept of slow travel.
Building Confidence: Navigating a foreign land on your own inevitably boosts your confidence. From negotiating public transportation to overcoming language barriers, every challenge surmounted becomes a victory, contributing to a newfound sense of self-assurance that transcends your travels.
Tailored Experiences: Solo travel allows you to tailor every experience to your preferences. Whether you’re a history buff exploring ancient ruins, an art enthusiast lost in a museum, or a nature lover hiking through serene landscapes, the joy is in the ability to craft a journey uniquely aligned with your passions.
Mindful Reflection: In the solitude of solo travel, moments of reflection become cherished. Watching a sunset, journaling by a tranquil lake, or simply observing the world around you fosters mindfulness. These moments of contemplation often lead to a deeper appreciation for life and the beauty inherent in every journey.
Conclusion
Solo travel is a transformative endeavor, a canvas upon which you paint the rich tapestry of your own experiences. The joy is not just in the destinations visited but in the profound impact the journey has on your soul. Embrace the unknown, relish the solitude, and savor the joys of solo travel as you embark on a liberating adventure of self-discovery and endless possibilities
