Bogotá, Colombia unfolds its true colors when explored at length. I truly believe that people should spend more time in this wonderful city. A lot of backpackers feel that they want to only spend 2 or 3 days here and that just isn’t enough. Yes it can be done and I have a great 3 day Bogota itinerary that will help you get the most out of your trip. But if you can do it I say spend a week here. The city has so much to offer.

I extended my stay in this vibrant city for 2 weeks in 2019, captivated by its authentic Colombian essence, distinct from larger cities dominated by expats and tourists.

I was at the end of my trip to Colombia in 2019. I had 2 weeks left before my flight back to Canada and I was a bit exhausted from having travelled all over this magnificent country.

So I stayed in the La Candelaria neighborhood for 2 weeks and loved every minute of it!

 

Things to Do In Bogota, Colombia

The city of Bogota is a treasure trove of experiences, offering museums, parks, walking tours, captivating street art, lively nightlife, and an unrivaled gastronomic scene. To make the most of your stay, choosing the right neighborhood is key, considering the vastness and diversity of the city.

And if you want to slow down, sit in a park and people watch that is perfectly fine as well.

The Neighborhoods of Bogota

Bogota has a number of neighborhoods or zones. If you are planning on staying in Bogota for either a few days or longer you will want to know where to stay to try and maximize your time in the city.

Bogota Neighborhoods  to Consider

The main Bogota Neighborhoods to think about are:

• La Candelaria
• Chapinero
• Zona G
• Zona T
• Usaquen

Keep in mind that Bogota is a large city. If you stay in the Chapinero area and want to visit La Candelaria(the main historic district) you are going to being taking an Uber, taxi, or city bus and it it will take about 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. 

 

What are the Best Areas to Stay in Bogota?

 

Best Neighborhood for Sightseeing: La Candelaria

• Stay here to be within walking distance of major tourist sites, including Plaza de Bolívar, the Botero Museum, and the Gold Museum.
• Loads of great hostels to choose from

 

Best Neighborhood for Budget Travelers: La Candelaria

• An ideal choice for budget travelers with its affordability, hostels, and proximity to key attractions.
• If you are only staying for a few nights you should choose La Candelaria

 

 

 

Best Neighborhood for Digital Nomads 

• Chapinerio is the best neighborhood for those who need to get some work done
• There are a lot of cafes and co-working spaces
• There are many great hostels to choose from(some even have co-working spaces)
• This area is generally considered somewhat safer than La Candelaria

 

 

Best Area in Bogota for Nightlife and Restaurants

• Chapinero offer diverse nightlife options, ensuring a memorable stay for those who enjoy the city’s after-hours vibrancy.
• Within Chapinero you have the sub zones of Zona G(Gourmet) and Zona T(Trendy) so if you are a foodie and want some nightlife these are the area you will want to consider

What Bogota Neighborhoods are Safest?

 

Chapinero

Considered among the safest areas, Chapinero provides a secure environment for visitors. When I stayed there recently I was walking around after 11pm and never felt unsafe at all.

For a perfect blend of a cool vibe, excellent restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and ample accommodation options, Chapinero stands out as the best overall neighborhood in Bogota. It is a taxi or Uber away from La Candelaria but you will not be disappointed if you choose this area.

Usaquen

The Usaquen area of Bogota is also considered a safe choice. However, it is quite far away from La Candelaria. 20 to 30 minutes by taxi.

 

Where to Stay in Bogota

There are loads of great hostels to choose from in La Candelaria and Chapinero. If you pick one and are not happy with it don’t worry! You can easily find another one to try.

Hostels in La Candelaria

Budget: Granada Hostel – A backpacker haven with pod bunk beds, a fully equipped guest kitchen, and a bar/restaurant.

Mid-Range: Magdalena Guest House – Modern, cozy, with hot showers, a garden area, and a communal kitchen.

Hostels In Chapinero

 

Budget: Selina Chapinero – A design-forward hostel with a coworking space, bar/restaurant, and communal kitchen.

Mid-Range: HAB Hotel Bogotá – Luxury amenities at mid-range prices, stylish interior, fitness center, and outdoor terrace.

Luxury: Casa Legado – Exceptional five-star hotel with unique rooms, complimentary breakfast, and a tranquil inner courtyard.
